The Phuket King's Cup Regatta is Asia's biggest and most popular regatta. Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, the event has been held every year since during the first week of December.
With Royal Patronage, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

With separate start lines off Kata Bay on Phuket Island's West Coast, the two-class-only race allows cruisers to take on the 'grand prix' racers on a level-playing field.

The Phuket King's Cup Regatta continues to grow it's international footprint each year with 2009 seeing more than 33 nationalities taking part and a record fleet of 111 boats. Strong international supporters of the Regatta continue to be Japanese sailors with 10 all-Japanese entries and 96 Japanese crew, making up approximately 10% of the 2009 fleet.

Thailand was voted the favourite sailing venue in Asia and the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta best regatta in Asia, according to a recent survey. The survey found also that the Regatta generated approximately 40 million baht for the Island economy during the 2009 event.

The morning started with the customary sail-past to celebrate His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyedej 82nd birthday.
